James’ mother, Betsy posted the sad news of Doug Franco passing away recently.

@FrancosMom: It is true that my sweet, generous husband passed away. He gave so much to his three sons and me, and to many other people, too.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Franco family for their loss. May your memories give you strength.

If you would like to share your own messages, thoughts, etc. you can do so here, or, like many of you have done already, in the shoutbox.

James tells teen he wants to buy her fan art

Such a great story!

James Franco was only at the Toronto International Film Festival for a fleeting visit on Sunday, but he quickly saw something he liked: homemade fan art crafted by a local teenager.

The Oscar-nominated “Milk” star was addressing an exclusive gathering about his new art installation, “Memories of Idaho,” when he noticed 13-year-old Macy Armstrong clutching three pieces of self-made art: a portrait of Franco made out of yarn; a collage made from newspaper clippings and a canvas inspired by the poster for “127 Hours.”

At first, it seemed like Franco was joking when he pointed at Armstrong’s art and announced that he wanted to buy her work. But after a few in the crowd giggled, Franco insisted, telling Armstrong: “I saw that one on the Internet, someone sent it to me. I wanna buy those.”

Armstrong, clad in a homemade T-shirt featuring photos of Franco’s face, was only too happy to oblige, handing her artwork over to one of his aides, who in turn jotted down her email address.

“Of course, I would love him to have them,” said a giddy Armstrong after the incident. “I’m a humongous fan. For his birthday, I made him a cake.”

Armstrong even runs a blog devoted to Franco — jamesfrancoforever.tumblr.com — and immediately took to the site to express her enthusiasm.

“He looked at me, he spoke to me, and I’m pretty sure we mentally got married!” she wrote. “Everyone on the street thinks I’m crazy because I’m freaking out! It’s like a dream.”

James Franco has announced plans to make a film adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s third novel Child Of God. Franco, who was at the Toronto International Film Festival, was asked by a fan if the rumours where true that he would direct an adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s Blood Meridian.

Franco replied by saying that he is attached to the project, but it was on hold and that he would make an adaptation of another McCarthy novel, Child Of God. Here’s exactly what the actor had to say when asked if the rumours were true:

“We shot a 20 minute test of it (Blood Meridian) that turned out pretty well… we were gearing up to do the feature but that for various reasons it’s on hold, but we are going to make a movie based on his (Cormac McCarthy’s) third book Child Of God.”

Some great news! Looks like James will be teaming up with Seth Rogen once again in Seth’s directorial debut, Jay & Seth vs. The Apocalypse. Details below!

Actor Seth Rogen (Green Hornet, Knocked Up) has cast James Franco and Jonah Hill to costar in his upcoming end-of-the-world comedy, Jay & Seth vs. The Apocalypse, which also marks Rogen’s directorial debut.

Based on a film short from 2007 that was directed by Jason Stone and starred Rogen with Jay Baruchel (The Sorcerer’s Apprenticeship, How to Train Your Dragon), the story follows a group of guys facing the apocalypse – and each other.

Franco (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) and Hill (Get Him to the Greek) will play themselves in the film, according to The Playlist, as will Rogen and Baruchel. The group of guys discover when barricaded inside a shelter that they are unhappy being stuck together.

Baruchel has suggested the horror comedy might include a series of cameo appearances by actors including Will Smith. “I want there to be a lot of dead famous people in it,” he explained.

Rogen is co-writing the screenplay with his frequent collaborator Evan Goldberg (Superbad, Pineapple Express).

Sad to hear that James will no longer be apart of this.

The movie star James Franco (“Rise of the Planet of the Apes”) is no longer linked to a planned Broadway revival of the Tennessee Williams drama “Sweet Bird of Youth,” Mr. Franco’s publicist said on Monday, and the production itself will not happen this fall as previously reported, according to the director attached to the project.

‘True Blood’ actor Jim Parrack talks about James

True Blood actor, Jim Parrack, talks about James, not once, but twice in an interview with Da Man Magazine.

DA MAN: Who are your dream co-workers, both actors and directors?
Jim Parrack: My dream directors are mostly dead now that Sidney Lumet passed away. [Elia] Kazan and [John] Cassavetes are my heroes. I like what James [Franco] is doing; he made a movie entitled The Broken Tower that excited me because there is this sense that he is fearless—and I think that’s about 80 percent of being a director. I want to work with Al Pacino. Badly. And Duvall. Anyone who cares, beyond what they get out of the job, I usually fall in love with.

DA MAN: Who is the sexiest, most alluring person you’ve ever worked with?
Jim Parrack: Ciera. The proof is I bound myself to her. We did a scene together for a class before we were a couple and I wanted her. All of her. I couldn’t sleep. She had this perfume and she would leave rehearsal and the couch would smell like her and I would go nuts. James [Franco] is alluring and maybe the most interesting person doing what we are doing these days. He and I have some stuff coming up. [We’re] going to Detroit to do some bizarre Tennessee Williams stuff, with him directing, and then some movies. He is fascinating.

James Franco Holds A Low-Key Art Opening

There were no bold names (aside from artist Terence Koh and P.S. 1 head Klaus Biesenbach) or event photographers at the opening of the omnipresent and multi-talented James Franco‘s new exhibition “High/Low, Rob Lowe,” on display through August 28 at Koh’s Asia Song Society. Unlike at most New York gallery openings that carry such a marquee headliner, the crowd on that drizzly Saturday night spilled out the door not because they couldn’t fit inside, but because they needed a breath of fresh air from the venue’s lack of air conditioning.

The opening, in fact, which showcased video and film installations created by and featuring Franco, proved to be a relatively low key affair, making one wonder if Franco’s overexposure (a “Jimmy Kimmel” appearance defending non-visible art, a New York Times article chronicling his creative split with performance artist Kalup Linzy, and a starring role in “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” the weekend’s number one movie at the box office, are just a few things that come to mind) kept people away, or if the opening was just quietly announced.

James Teaches Art Class At PS1; Collaboration With Gus Van Sant

The modern day Renaissance Man can seemingly do anything (except, maybe, host an awards show), and now Franco is adding art teacher to his already laughably long resume.

New York’s MoMA PS1 will present a collaboration between Franco and ‘Milk’ director Gus Van Sant. The museum will host master classes offering a seminar-style discussion on “contemporary practice with artists, authors, musicians, curators, theorists and scholars.” This is kind of every liberal arts girl’s fantasy: a round table discussion with James Franco talking about art and wearing a tweed jacket.

Franco’s work will also be on display. His film, ‘My Own Private River,’ is recut version of Van Sant’s ‘My Own Private Idaho’ which features River Phoenix.

The film will be on replay during museum hours–we’d have it no other way, Professor.

‘Breaking Dawn’ Didn’t ‘Make Sense’ For James Franco, Director Says

Picture in your mind James Franco sparkling in the sunlight with red vampire eyes, because director Bill Condon told MTV that the actor almost (sort of) was cast in “Breaking Dawn.”

The “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” star has long been lamenting the fact that he could not be a part of the “Twilight” film series, of which he has admitted to being a big fan. During an appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” in December, Franco even admitted that he petitioned for a role in the “Breaking Dawn” movies but was turned down.
