‘Child Of God’ Will Hit Film Festivals This Year

As you know, James Franco is currently in the midst of shooting “Child of God,” an adaptation of Cormac McCarthy‘s grim novel about about a violent man living on the edges of society, and dabbling in all kinds of unsavory activities (necrophilia, pedophilia among them). And while at any given moment Franco has about fifteen hundred things going on, you don’t have to worry that this one might be neglected, because it seems it’s going to make its debut sooner than we thought.

The film is currently shooting in West Virginia and The Pocahontas Times recently got some time with the filmmakers, who shared their plans for the movie. ”We’ll hit film festivals in six to eight months and then it’ll be out in theaters next year,” said producer Vince Jolivette. No word on if any deals have been struck with distributors yet (doubtful, since most will want to see what they’re dealing with first) but fingers crossed as it seems this could be headed to Toronto or Venice to unspool in the fall.

Franco’s Child Of God Already Shooting?

Back in September there were reports that, while James Franco had hit a wall with his planned adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s Blood Meridian, he was sticking with the author and turning to the earlier Child Of God instead. Nothing’s been heard in the meantime, with Franco’s name still attached to practically everything that’s announced, but there are reports this morning that Child Of God is unfolding in front of Franco’s cameras as we speak, and that Tim Blake Nelson is starring.

Even more bleak than Blood Meridian (if that were possible), Child Of God is a slim volume about a backwoodsman called Ballard. Recently released from jail, Ballard opts for the survivalist route, takes up residence in a cave in the East Tennessee hills, and goes on a murderous spree to indulge his penchant for necrophilia.

James Franco is in negotiations to star in The Game, MGM’s adaptation of the best-selling book about picking up women.

Brian Koppelman and David Levien are writing and directing the adaptation. Part memoir, part how-to guide, The Game details author Neil Strauss’s effort to learn the tricks to becoming a successful pick-up artist, even moving into a Sunset Strip mansion filled with other competing players to find love.

Franco would star as Mystery, a man who serves as Strauss’ teacher in the book. Mystery later starred in a VH1 reality series called The Pick-Up Artist.

Franco, repped by CAA, James/Levy Management and Loeb & Loeb, will play himself in The Apocalypse, the directorial debut of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg which shoots this spring. He last starred in Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

There are two AFM project packages being shopped on the same subject: Richard Kuklinski, the notorious New Jersey mob hit man. Nu Image has Boardwalk Empire‘s Michael Shannon to play Kuklinski and Benicio Del Toro and (maybe) James Franco attached to The Iceman, a film that will be directed by Ariel Vromen that is eyeing a production start next summer.

James Franco is reportedly under consideration to play Jason Bourne in the next installment of the rebooted franchise.

Sources at the after-party for Franco’s new movie 127 Hours – which is already considered an Oscar frontrunner – say Bourne screenwriter Tony Gilroy “made a beeline for Franco, asking to be introduced to him”.

A source close to Gilroy played down the rumour, saying “He was just there to see the movie.”
