For James Franco, it's lights! camera! education!

Being a movie star isn't enough for James Franco.
The gorgeous actor graduated from UCLA last month at the age of 30, after quietly taking English literature courses for years. And he's not stopping there. In September, Franco will move from L.A. to New York to attend graduate school at NYU. The "Spider-Man" star joins a small but noble cadre of celebrities who have found that fame and fortune aren't as fulfilling as they may seem. Natalie Portman got a B.A. in psychology at Harvard, Queen guitarist Brian May got a Ph.D. in astrophysics, Bill Cosby and former Knick Dick Barnett both got doctorates in education, and Shaquille O'Neal fulfilled a promise to his mother to finish school after he dropped out of LSU to join the NBA. He went on to get an MBA, and wants to go for advanced degrees in criminology and art history. Franco, who so distinguished himself as an actor in "James Dean" that Robert De Niro personally cast him in "City by the Sea," has always loved to write. He has co-written and directed "The Ape," "Fool's Gold" and "Good Time Max." Despite his Hollywood success, his parents were disappointed when he dropped out of college in his teens to star in such hits as "Freaks and Geeks." But he did his homework in between 50 film and TV projects, including the hilarious upcoming Seth Rogen pot flick "Pineapple Express." And it wasn't just to please Mom and Dad. "I am going back to school because I love being around people who are interested in what I'm interested in," Franco told us. "That is the best way to learn. "For me, being able to act in movies is not having it all. I am interested in other things, and I take my interests seriously. Thus, I'm back in school." Are you listening, LeBron James? |

James on Embracing the Funny
Posted April 26, 2008
James Franco and younger brother Dave (he of the 10-second Superbad cameo) have teamed up for a series of Web videos on FunnyOrDie.com, where they put on display their special brand of brotherhood. Dubbed ''Acting With James Franco'' and taped in the Los Angeles apartment they share, the clips feature a cheerfully preening and impatient James doling out pearls of thespian wisdom to an uncomfortable and unconvinced Dave. In the first installment, which claims to have attracted over 120,000 views since going up last month, James teaches the art of crying on camera through the anguished sense memory of his childhood cat's sudden death. The second video, which debuted a couple days ago, sees James giving a practical lesson on the intricacies of greenscreen acting in a multibillion-dollar-grossing comic-book trilogy. When he's not giving his brother a hard time on the Web, James Franco has been busy with roles in two highly anticipated movies: Pineapple Express and Milk. EW.com spoke to the siblings about the Funny or Die videos, their upcoming projects, and their place in the vaunted Judd Apatow network.
