When he wasn’t filming “Howl” or “Eat Pray Love” or going to grad school at NYU or appearing on “General Hospital” or doing art projects last year, James Franco made a movie with Elizabeth Edwards’ brother.

Franco stars with Josh Lucas in “William Vincent,” which used to be called “In Praise of Shadows.” Jay Anania, the brother of Elizabeth Edwards, put upon estranged wife of former Senator John Edwards, directed it. Although, as Lucas remembered it, Franco did the directing.

Lucas told me last week that the Franco film was one of five movies he just made back-to-back. Franco also showed him his short “Herbert White,” which played at Sundance.

“I started out thinking it was a crappy low-budget student film,” he said. “But it turned out very well.” “William Vincent” will go to festivals, maybe Toronto in the fall. There’s no info yet on whether Elizabeth Edwards will help her brother promote it. She may be in divorce court by then.

Director Bio
James Francos short film Herbert White premiered at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival and then went on to screen at the Berlin Film Festival in February. SATURDAY NIGHT is his first foray into documentary filmmaking and is proud to have its world premiere at South By Southwest. Later this year James will direct Ham on Rye based on the novel by Charles Bukowski.

James Franco works it out in this new ad for Gucci by Gucci Sport Pour Homme, the latest fragrance from Gucci.

The 31-year-old actor, who is also the face of the first male Gucci fragrance, is “perfect for this fragrance,” creative director Frida Giannini told WWD, adding “[James] personifies the sort of nonchalance and unforced appeal that is most attractive in a man. While in the advertising campaign, he captures the fragrance’s casual, modern and masculine air.”

Gucci by Gucci Sport Pour Homme products start at $27 and will be launched globally in April.

Talk of a sequel to “Pineapple Express” has kinda been the Internet version of dorm room stoner talk: Dude, that would be so sick if they did another one!! The chatter seemed as substantial as smoke wafting out of a bong, as tethered to reality as James Franco and Seth Rogen’s brains after lighting up some of the title ganja in their 2008 comedy.

Rogen has talked to us a bit about the possibility of a sequel, as has producer Judd Apatow, but it all seemed simply like a whole lotta hot air without much action behind it. But at Sundance last month, Franco told us that some concrete steps are likely in the works for bringing more “Pineapple” to the big screen.

“I think some practical steps are being taken to actually make it happen,” he told MTV’s Josh Horowitz.

Was Franco just engaging in some idle chit-chat? Could a sequel really happen? Hit play on the video to find out and hear why Franco said, “I think it’s in the air. We certainly have discussed it and all dreamed about it.”

James Franco’s The Feast of Stephen, won the Teddy for best short film. The plot description of the four-minute short reads: “A young man watches a group of teenagers playing basketball. Suddenly the four lads chase him and start terrorizing him. Or so it seems.” The Feast of Stephen features Remy Germinario, Ty Anania, Louis Anania, Phil Naess, and Theo Saluan.

Franco was also represented by another gay-themed film, Robert Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman’s Howl, shown out of competition.

With yesterday’s tease that “Percy Jackson” star Logan Lerman is in talks for the “Spider-Man” lead, the friendly neighborhood webslinger is on a lot of minds lately.

When MTV News caught up with “Spider-Man” cast member James Franco during the Sundance Film Festival, he explained whether Harry Osborn was originally expected to come back (from the dead) for the now-canceled fourth film, reveals his Spidey-themed birthday gift for former director Sam Raimi, and offers some advice for the next “Spider-Man” cast.

“No, there were no plans,” said Franco when asked about Harry’s potential return.

“Sam Raimi just had a big birthday,” he continued. “All of his friends made little videos for it. I did one about not being in ‘Spider-Man 4,’ because they were making it at the time. He called me up. He loved it and said, ‘I wish I had a part for you in ‘Spider-Man 4,’ but I don’t.”

As for any wisdom he could drop on the future Spider-Man and his surrounding cast, Franco said to “bring a lot of reading material or your DVD set of ‘Lost,’ because when you do the effects you’ll be sitting around for a long time.”

Well, it’s not exactly “Inside The Actors Studio,” but it’s fun all the same. Thanks, James!
